Perfect Puppies
There's a growing trend on people wanting their puppies perfect.
Recall nailed.
Lead manners spot on.
Distracted by anything? Never!
I'm blaming the rise of tiktok trainer's and dogs not behaving badly on TV tbh...
(Can... worms...open ..)
Because it didn't used to be this way.
Your puppy is not a mini adult dog.
He's a puppy, with the attention span of a gnat.
If he's distracted when your out...well of course he is.. he should notice things in the world!
Your new puppy doesn't need a sit, watch me, and leave it drilled in as you order their every choice around distractions.
He needs a secure attachment.
He needs to know what's valuable.
If you want to be of value...
Shouting commands military style isn't it.
Neither is choking your puppy. ( I wish that went without saying!)
Paying good behaviours and setting your puppy up for success will get you the outcomes your looking for.
They rely on YOU though.
Keep Training sessions short.
Keep them engaging and fun.
Train fun things too!
Yes your puppy should know boundaries, rules and manners.
I'm not saying to the contrary.
But trying to get a toddler to do GCSEs is unlikely to gain you results right?!
So why are we pushing puppies for perfection?!
Let them grow, let them explore and let them create a connection with you.
If you expect perfection- you'll only achieve disappointment.
That's not fair on you or your puppy.
Instead help them grow and understand the world.
Pay them for good choices, train when and where they can handle.
Strive for progress, not perfection.
